Happy Birthday to Adobe Photoshop!

Industry standard image editing software Adobe Photoshop celebrates its 20th birthday today. Since the launch of the very first version 1.0 in 1990 Photoshop has evolved and developed, adding new features and taking into account the changing requirements of its increasing followers and users. Most significantly the image editing suite has taken into account the arrival of the Internet, developing its features not only to satisfy the needs of the photographic, print and publishing industry but also to ensure that it has become a standard throughout website studios and digital agencies.

Photoshop’s birth was in 1987 when brothers Thomas and John Knoll began adding features to a pixel imaging program used to showcase grayscale images on a black and white monitor. They developed the program they’d named ‘Display’ to process image files. Soon after the program caught the eye of industry influencers and in 1988 Adobe licensed the software, renamed it to Photoshop and began shipping the first copies in 1990.

From its humble beginnings Photoshop has grown to dominate the digital imaging industry, as a piece of software few have had its influence for such a sustained period of time. The product quite literally redefined creativity in the digital age and its influence can be seen all around us from magazine covers, billboards, movies, product labels to Conservative politicians.
