Since 2000, AAF has been caring for several children orphaned by Aids. The children have been supported in food health and education costs, but have been living with other family members. Because of the growing number of orphans resulting from Aids and other diseases, we are starting to set up a sheltered community for these children, keeping them as a family unit and providing them with a home on our own land. We purchased land in August 2002, and constructed the first home the following year. Each family has a permanent mud brick house, a washhouse, a VPL latrine, and a shared cookhouse. Good water is obtained from a well only 200m. away, and a clinic and school are only 2km. walk. Each home has sufficient land to grow some food, and here the children are encouraged to learn agricultural skills. AAF staff continually monitor the children’s health and welfare, and ensure they receive an education.
Kyule Kissinga had several abdominal operations as a young child, resulting in his inability to eat the normal diet. His mother could not afford to buy more expensive foods, often asking for AAF help. We are now providing his education at a special boarding school which can cater for his special dietary needs.
