Living in traditional mud & thatch huts, the Akamba are mostly subsistence farmers, relying on growing enough food on their land to feed their family. If they have surplus to sell for cash then they can afford to send the children to school, and be able to visit a clinic if sick. Droughts are quite common, giving no surplus. With no employment in the region - famine is a regular visitor!

During times of extreme famine, the Kenyan government provides emergency food to the region, but Kenya is a poor country, and each family only receives about 6kgs. of grain every two weeks.

Barely enough to keep them alive!

As the poor are always the first to suffer, AAF seeks out families who are in most need and provides extra rations of maize & beans which is the staple diet of the area.
